As I read the “A Personal Cyberinfrastructure” my mind wanders into how fast the technology used in University is growing. Back when I went to this school in 2009, there were no smartphones, no tablets and barely anyone bringing their computers to class. You only needed your best friend paper and pencil. However these days being in the “digital age” classes differ even within these two years. Smart phones can be used for entertainment but also for learning with their ever growing apps and computers and tablets are becoming the new notebooks and textbooks we use to carry around in our backpacks. University has become a better place to learn with more tools available for its students. Though I find that “higher education” does not have to relate with what most people think a person who will have more thinking skills or different ideas but, rather a person who knows more information. I personally think that a person is made from what he learns in his lifetime and the processed information become who they are.
“Here’s one idea. Suppose that when students matriculate, they are assigned their own web servers — not 1GB folders in the institution’s web space but honest-to-goodness virtualized web servers of the kind available for $7.99 a month from a variety of hosting services, with built-in affordances ranging from database maintenance to web analytics. As part of the first-year orientation, each student would pick a domain name. Over the course of the first year, in a set of lab seminars facilitated by instructional technologists, librarians, and faculty advisors from across the curriculum, students would build out their digital presences in an environment made of the medium of the web itself. They would experiment with server management tools via graphical user interfaces such as cPanel or other commodity equivalents. They would install scripts with one-click installers such as SimpleScripts. They would play with wikis and blogs; they would tinker and begin to assemble a platform to support their publishing, their archiving, their importing and exporting, their internal and external information connections. They would become, in myriad small but important ways, system administrators for their own digital lives.3 In short, students would build a personal cyberinfrastructure, one they would continue to modify and extend throughout their college career — and beyond.”
This idea given by Campbell in my opinion has its ups and downs. What I disagree with blogs and more news being widen through the general public is that more of the same idea same views will dominate the web. Different idea’s different methods different views will be overpowered by these stronger ideas. So in short giving a student a force blog will not only ruin their thinking but also their learning experience. However, The idea of teaching them how to navigate and take the most out of what kind of information is out there is something that can be used from this paragraph. Most students know how to go to wikipedia for a topic but don’t really know how to use internet effectively. No one has ever taught me how to use the internet. There are infinite information yet we only learn to look at the few.
This will be my final ds106 assignment for this class
I decided to do the writing assignment session, New Emerging Technology Writing Assignment
This assignment directions is write about a recent emerging technology and how it has effected our society. This assignment I felt was perfect for this section as we are talking about the future of education.
Well the NUMBER ONE technology anyone would have to agree is the emerging of smartphones. Smartphones have been our only a few years yet the idea of it has spread so fast that most people in advanced countries own them or at least have used them and know what it does. Smartphones can do anything a computer can do but it can be done anywhere as long as the person is holding the phone. This results in information flying around here and there within seconds. For instance i think that twitter has gained alot from smartphones especially in Korea. If you go to Naver the number one search engine in Korea and search any famous star on it a stars profile will pop up and their recent twit and peoples twit about this person. People can be riding the bus and in the past people would just stare into space or pretty girls/guys on the bus but now they are taking in information and replying their thought instantly.
Whether we like it or not cyberspace and society is growing rapidly even though there is only one class in the university. Out in the real world it is what is being invented at this very moment.
As my mind wanders as how the internet will be effected by this as time goes on is beyond my imaginations. SmartPhones are becoming our cameras our textbooks our news our toy and our life. One possilbe thought that comes into mind is that like in Cambell’s video our whole process of learning will change. The possibilities are endless for these phones and technology and to be honest I am both scared and excited to what it will become/brings in the future.
The Lost Decade
After watching The Visible College: Four Futures for Higher Education What caught my attention out of the four possible futures I thought that alt.residential caught my attention the most.
This section talks of future where education is learned online. Classroom learning becomes rare and everything can be learning in their room. Imagining a life in this kind of society is so crazy because interaction for me especially at the young age is through school. Without this i personally think that the human actions will change. First of all interaction of people overall will drop substantially. People can learn what they want to learn so people who specialized skills will be much more higher. I think that Fashion and television will dissapear in this future is because these two are closely related with the interaction between humans.
My life would totally be different from now. I would not know the friends I know now but “online” friends that i interacted from gaming. What people call manner might dissapear because of the less interaction and the idea of belonging in a group becomes something of a distant memory. If i were to have a kid the kid would not talk to me but only online. Life would be in my opinion a mess and this futuristic idea would not work and if it were would change the whole human race and its thinking habits.
Memories of the Nimda virus
What is the Nimda Virus?
A Virus that could spread by sending itself out to your email contacts. By infecting your files and automatically spreading across your network and infecting exisiting programs on hard. And because the fact that it came a week after the 9/11 incident people thought that this was also a terrorist act.
It is said that it is made in China but honestly no one knows even today.
Like a mosquito the file uses a mechanism called parasitism. It would infect any files on window and would not stop even would effect files that were already affected.
The Nimda virus does not hurt computer hardware, just slowing them through clog Internet traffic and e-mail access with junk. Worms are viruses caught through emails but this file can be caught while surfing the web. If Internet users stop at a Web site that’s been infected, their personal files can be infiltrated by the virus.
Nimda is also admin spelled backwards.
Best way to fight this worm is to constantly update your anti-virus programs. That seems to be the only way shown to users who don’t know much about worms or viruses
For my third ds106 assignment I decided to do the web assignment section called “Google Maps Story” I decided to do this assignment to introduce korea more and also talk about korean army as well.
This is the area where i served about 50% of my military service in. I was in the DMZ called GOP (General Outpost). There isn’t many people you get to see here and the place is very quiet. We are far away from the city and the only building is the building we live in which consist of about 35 people. In the Korean Army you dont’ get many vacations but the ones you do are golden and are very memorable.
This is my home. If people have ever been to seoul they will know about gangnam. I live around 20-30 minutes away from there. I’ve lived here for about 7 years and have many memories of the place.
Well when i was out i decided to go to the beach. We drove here at midnight and we ate shellfish and clams with a little bit of alchohol and afterwards i went into the ocean because of the alcohol..
Still these memories will stay with me forever. I hope these pictures interested you and if you have any questions about korea come and ask me!
For my second assignment I chose to do a design assignment called “Word” and directions for this assignment was to not using any colors try to represent the meaning of the word through manipulating the word itself.
I chose upside down because I first thought about making the word look upside down but decided that it wasn’t creative enough so i decided to have each word turn toward becoming upside down.
I opened up photoshop and first time each letter to spell Upsidedown. Then putting them in a row I rotated using ctrl+t on each letter to make it seem like the word is slowing rotating 180 degrees.
I think the picture explains the word well and this assignment was a blast and learn some new skills for photoshop
For my first assignment for this section I decided to do Time Lapse Composite which is in the Visual Assignments section. The point of this assignment is to make a photo of a place and a thing that demonstrates motion and time. The example given for this assignment looked like this…
This photo shows a picture of airplanes departing in the runway. When looking at the picture i thought of many ideas but soccer came to mind the most so i decided to do soccer.
The shooter is Steven Gerrard, a midfielder for Liverpool. It shows him shooting and I edited to make it so that the ball going in all directions.
Directions – I first found a picture of Gerrard shooting the ball from a distance and then also found a picture of a ball. I opened up adobe Photoshop and edited the balls size so that the ball fits the picture. Pressing ctrl+t allows the program to edit and then repeating the process of copy pasting and moving the picture to appropriate places.
