Memories of the Nimda virus
What is the Nimda Virus?
A Virus that could spread by sending itself out to your email contacts. By infecting your files and automatically spreading across your network and infecting exisiting programs on hard. And because the fact that it came a week after the 9/11 incident people thought that this was also a terrorist act.
It is said that it is made in China but honestly no one knows even today.
Like a mosquito the file uses a mechanism called parasitism. It would infect any files on window and would not stop even would effect files that were already affected.
The Nimda virus does not hurt computer hardware, just slowing them through clog Internet traffic and e-mail access with junk. Worms are viruses caught through emails but this file can be caught while surfing the web. If Internet users stop at a Web site that’s been infected, their personal files can be infiltrated by the virus.
Nimda is also admin spelled backwards.
Best way to fight this worm is to constantly update your anti-virus programs. That seems to be the only way shown to users who don’t know much about worms or viruses
For my third ds106 assignment I decided to do the web assignment section called “Google Maps Story” I decided to do this assignment to introduce korea more and also talk about korean army as well.
This is the area where i served about 50% of my military service in. I was in the DMZ called GOP (General Outpost). There isn’t many people you get to see here and the place is very quiet. We are far away from the city and the only building is the building we live in which consist of about 35 people. In the Korean Army you dont’ get many vacations but the ones you do are golden and are very memorable.
This is my home. If people have ever been to seoul they will know about gangnam. I live around 20-30 minutes away from there. I’ve lived here for about 7 years and have many memories of the place.
Well when i was out i decided to go to the beach. We drove here at midnight and we ate shellfish and clams with a little bit of alchohol and afterwards i went into the ocean because of the alcohol..
Still these memories will stay with me forever. I hope these pictures interested you and if you have any questions about korea come and ask me!
For my second assignment I chose to do a design assignment called “Word” and directions for this assignment was to not using any colors try to represent the meaning of the word through manipulating the word itself.
I chose upside down because I first thought about making the word look upside down but decided that it wasn’t creative enough so i decided to have each word turn toward becoming upside down.
I opened up photoshop and first time each letter to spell Upsidedown. Then putting them in a row I rotated using ctrl+t on each letter to make it seem like the word is slowing rotating 180 degrees.
I think the picture explains the word well and this assignment was a blast and learn some new skills for photoshop
For my first assignment for this section I decided to do Time Lapse Composite which is in the Visual Assignments section. The point of this assignment is to make a photo of a place and a thing that demonstrates motion and time. The example given for this assignment looked like this…
This photo shows a picture of airplanes departing in the runway. When looking at the picture i thought of many ideas but soccer came to mind the most so i decided to do soccer.
The shooter is Steven Gerrard, a midfielder for Liverpool. It shows him shooting and I edited to make it so that the ball going in all directions.
Directions – I first found a picture of Gerrard shooting the ball from a distance and then also found a picture of a ball. I opened up adobe Photoshop and edited the balls size so that the ball fits the picture. Pressing ctrl+t allows the program to edit and then repeating the process of copy pasting and moving the picture to appropriate places.
“think the unthinkable”
I really like this because i personally think that education with the internet does not allow us to think freely. We are programed to think like everyone else through news and blogs in popular sites. Higher education should focus on the creativity and new ideas of its learners. Right use of the technology should help the classrooms and the students in it
For my second topic I chose Copy Right and Wrong.
For the article I chose to do Copyright Risks in Embedding YouTube Clips which was a very interesting article about embedding video’s on youtube clips. It talk about sites likes youtube who have millions of videos on their site should be held reliable for the copyrighted videos that come up.
“Any time you incorporate a copyrighted work into a site without the rightsholders’ consent, you’re potentially liable” said Howell. Despite the fact that the user who uploads the video might not know that they are actually breaking the copyright rule might still be fined for it. The payment can go up to 30k dollars.
The Article even gives steps to help users avoid infringement and have a safe experience loading video’s on youtube.
1. Don’t Embed Clearly Infringing Material
2. Embed from Official Channels
3. Stick to Popular Amateur Clips
4. Say Something About It
5. When in Doubt, Link Don’t Embed
Overall I think that this article was very useful article to help our experience with online sites such as youtube.
Cyberspace: The New Face of War in the XXI Century
For the Fear and Loathing Online presentation I decided to do it on “Repression, Control & Propaganda” and with this topic I found an article regarding cyberwarfare.
With the technological evolution and globalization, a new kind of war is being waged. This new kind of war disregards the number of soldiers, power of weapons or the geological space but to cyberspace. A proffesional definition given is here “actions by a nation state to penetrate another nation’s computers or networks for the purpose of causing damage or disruption.” by Richard A. Clarke in Cyberwars.
This topic really interested me because the fact that I was in the army and I know how important information is and how seriously it is taken. A fact that a computer program can devistate a whole group of people and it has caught my attention that we really do rely on computer way to much. The Stuxnet computer worm is one incedent that caught many people and brought the idea of how serious it is.
Some pointers i wanted to point out for this article is this
- “If we were in a cyberwar today, the United States would lose.” former Director of National Intelligence, Vice Admiral Michael McConnell
- Pentagon attacked 5000 times a day
- extremely good Cyber offense but almost no defense.
The presentation was fun because it was more of a discussion then presenting especially for my topic. I was suprised many people didn’t know about the stuxnet program and it was pleasure explaining it to people and them asking questions and discussing about the topic.
Question is how effective would cyberwarfare be in an actual war situation?
I recorded from Die Hard 4 because the example of the Fire Sale reminded me of a cyber-attack
